Suikido Flow Arts as Yogic Practice

Is Suikido Flow Arts a Yoga practice?

As a unique fusion of internal martial art, qi-gong, dance and yoga, Suikido Yogic Flow stands out among the many forms of yoga available today. Thus we have often been asked how we practice yoga and in what way Suikido as Yoga differs from the classical forms of yoga.

To shed light upon this question, we can highlight some of the key elements where Suikido Yoga follows different principles than classical yoga:

CLASSIC YOGA

  • Cultivation of Virtues - Yamas and Niyamas

  • Internal and external control

  • Specific breathing methods - Pranayama

  • Body Locks - Bandhas

  • Physical Stability - Asanas

  • Extreme working positions and stretches

  • Passive relaxation

  • Sitting meditation

  • One-pointedness, gaze - Drishti

  • Purification and sensory control

  • Perfection - Salvation - Moksha

  • To be the divine consciousness

SUIKIDO YOGIC FLOW

  • Sensory perception and physical consciousness

  • Internal and external energy flow

  • Natural breathing

  • Activation of the inner body

  • Physical fluidity - Being in motion

  • Balanced and functional elasticity

  • Active relaxation

  • Dynamic moving meditation

  • Spaciousness and expanded perception

  • Wholeness - the integration of Yin and Yang

  • Naturalness – The uncultivated

  • Return to the order and flow of nature

As a yogic practice, Suikido Flow Arts is a physical-energetic system that, through dynamic movements and the inner alchemy of energy, aims to nurture, preserve and develop what are known as "The Three Treasures" - Jing, Chi, Shen:

精 Jing:          Original essence.
Lower Dantien (Hara), middle of the body, center, waist, abdomen.

氣 Chi:            Vital life force that flows into and through the body.
Middle Dantien (Solar plexus), diaphragm, breathing.

神 Shen:         Holistic Intelligence and Consciousness.
Upper Dantien (Pineal gland), inner vision, seeing, expansion of consciousness.

The Yogic practice of Suikido promotes the development and flow of these essential energies in the human body. In harmony with the Taoist concept of Life Energy: the entire Cosmos, Life and the human body are moved and inspired by this energy.
